Sabbath at Rest - Part 2, Lynn Green, Gen 2:1-3, 25th July 2010

This message was Part 2, focussed on Gen 2:1-3, of looking at Sabbath 'as a time of rest' and looking at it' to some extent' from the perspective of retirement.

In modern times we have extended the duration of a day from just day-light hours. Morning afternoon evening and night seems to merge together with no boundaries.

Lynn noted that God set times and achieved them. Don't we set our own tasks but plan to do far too much and thus push our time boundaries to unachievable positions. Why do we plan and agree to do so much. In retirement we loose the planned rhythm of our working days. We need to create a retirement time plan – create a structure and stick to it.

Should Sunday be our Sabbath (rest day)? For some it may not be possible. Lynn pointed to Romans 14:5-6 – Have a Sabbath but suggested that we need 'to set our own day for it', not to eliminate it if Sunday is inappropriate.

Sabbath at Rest, Lynn Green, Gen 2:1-3 & MArk 6:30-34, 25th July 2010

How do we approach like and use our time? Do we want to stop and stop the world and get off?

In Genesis we read that were are here to work and to rest just as God did. Sabbath is about stopping, taking a break and non-use of time.

Is Sabbath a waste of time. Lynn pointed out that God did not indicate that he was exhausted. God stopped to 'enjoy' his creation. Do we every stop to reflect and say 'that was good' do we stop and appreciate? Or do we just move onto the next item on our to-do list. To be fully human we need a have a balance of time between work and rest.

Jesus invited his disciples to take time out and have a rest. He did not drive them on the to next task.

Lynn came across the following statement in her readings. 'Illness has become our modern day Sabbath' How true is that for many people?

How do you live your life? Do you live to the worlds plan of life or to Gods' rhythm of work and rest?

Jesus_re-visited - Vision 20/20, John 3:1-8, Laura Downs, 4th July 2010

Laura was one of the church's young people who also participated in some of the youth leadership activities. She is currently working in London and studying for a degree in youth work and theology.

The service was a family service in which the church's Girl's Brigade paraded Laura looked at the story of Nicodemus through three different perspectives, or lenses – 1) Beer Goggles which can distort our view, 2. 3D glasses which creates images that are false and an illusion or 3. Prescription lenses that show the ral image and truth.

During Laura's talk she got the younger children to make a garden using coloured modelling clay.
Hostility to Hospitality, David Wilkie, Eph 2:11-20, 20th June 2010

David was one of the Church's young people that spent time working with the Church's Youth Minister - Clare Hooper, before going to university for a second degree in youth work. Currently he is working with an Anglican church in Weston-Super-Mare.

David's talk looked at life as a journey. Who we are? How do we engage with people? How do we express our faith in our culture? How do we interact with those around us?

David reminded us of the make up of our churches and the make up of our local populations. Does our church reflect the mix of our local society? Are we a weird group on the fringes of our local society? How might we change to be a true reflection of God in our society?

David's (God's) challenge to us was to ask God to put us into unfamiliar places so that we can be what God wants to be, to do with us what he wants and for us to reflect him to those around us.
