The Wokingham Night Shelter for the homeless started as a trial from January to February 2020. It provided shelter, a hot meal and a bed for the night, and a cooked breakfast in the morning. Anyone in the Wokingham area could be referred to the Night Shelter by agencies such as Citizens Advice, the Foodbank or Wokingham Borough Council. The scheme was co-ordinated by Pilgrim Hearts and involved a number of churches, with seven providing the physical space and others supporting through volunteers etc. Wokingham Baptist Church ran the Friday night shelter.
Last winter (2020-2021) there was no night shelter provision but anyone homeless in Wokingham was offered temporary accommodation by the council. The Salvation Army looked to provide hot meals seven days a week over the winter to support these individuals.
